About the competition
After four years, the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating World Series returns to Ostrava. The ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating is a competition that was established in 1997. The series includes seven competitions, and a subsequent final is held with the senior categories. The competition is intended for young world skaters aged 13-19 (21 years for men in ice dance, pairs, and sports pairs).
The second part of this year’s series will take place – from September 4 – September 7, 2022, in the OSTRAVAR ARENA.
This year’s World Series Finals will be held in Turin, Italy. The Czech Republic, specifically Ostrava, experienced the final of the entire series in 2005. Since 1997, when the International Skating Union (ISU for short) started the series for the first time, the Junior Grand Prix has been held in Ostrava 13 times (within CR 14 times – in 2005, the competition took place in Liberec). This year will be the thirteenth competition of ISU JGP in Ostrava.
Nowhere else in the world have the ISU Junior Grand Prix series been held more often than in Ostrava. The constellation of figure skating aces who have won in Ostrava in the past is also interesting. For example, in 2003 Tomáš Verner won the race in Ostrava, who a few years later repeatedly won medals at top adult competitions. In 2016, Anna Dušková and Martin Bidař won in Ostrava, who were also junior world champions in the same season. In 2014, Ostrava also saw Yevgenija Medvedeva, later the world champion. The Junior Grand Prix is a top series where the later world elite usually appear for the first time. This year’s world champion Nathan Chen won the entire JGP in the 2015/2016 season.
